Skype
is a popular software program that allows you to make phone calls through the
Internet using voice over IP (VOIP) technology. The service is free to call
another subscriber of Skype and permits calls to non-Skype phone numbers on a
fee service. The application also combines video conferencing, file transfer,
chat and instant messaging within the application.
Recently, Skype has been made available for use
on the iPhone, where you can call other Skype users for free when in a WiFi
zone with your iPhone. Skype also works on the iPhone if you are in a 3G, GPRS
or Edge network environment if WiFi is not available. Previously, in order to
use your Skype account on the iPhone, a third party re-hosting tool had to be
used for the application. This is no longer required.
