The Best Ways to Speed Up a PC

If you're tired of waiting long minutes for your computer to complete basic tasks, you have to take a few hours to optimize your computer. Slowness is caused by space, file and memory issues. You may also have to buy a few new pieces of hardware if your computer is experiencing severe slowdowns.

Remove Unneeded Files and Programs

    • To speed up your PC, you have to first free up disk space. Delete large files on your computer. Do a search of your hard drive and request that the search function find all files that are sized at 5 MB or larger. Get rid of anything that you don't need.
Next, use the disk cleanup function (go to "My Computer," right-click your hard drive and then go to "Properties") to clean up your drive further. This tool will find old unused files, temporary files and files that you have sitting in your recycle bin.

Finally, go to your control panel and select "Add or Remove Programs." Scan the list to see if there are any programs that can be deleted. If you use up too much disk space on your hard drive, this could cause the computer to slow down. Getting rid of programs could help speed up your computer.
Consider upgrading your hard drive to a larger size as well so that you will have more space (for instance, go from 10 to 20 GB).

Defragment

    • Right-click your hard drive and go to "Properties" again. Select the "Tools" tab and then click "Defragment now." Fragmented or broken files can cause slower performance, because the system has to search and work harder to put the files back together. The computer will piece together all of your "fragmented" files, which will cause your computer to run faster. Do this once a month.

Run Fewer Programs

    • When you run too many programs at once, this can cause your computer to slow down. Close up any extra programs that you have running and only use one or two at a time to help speed up your computer.
Also, check your processes. Click "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" and click the tab for "Task Manager." This will show you every process that is running on your computer at the moment. If you see that one program is using up an extraordinary amount of memory as compared to the other programs and you do not recognize it, do a search on Google for the process name to see if it is legitimate. Do not attempt to delete processes that you do not know, as they could be vital to your system performance. Install a virus scanner and firewall to resolve a problem with a virus or spyware program instead.

Add Memory

    • Possibly the best way to speed up your computer if you are having a severe performance problem is to add more RAM (random access memory). Buy a new RAM chip that is compatible with your computer. You must take the computer or laptop apart to insert the chip. Increasing the RAM on your computer can instantly improve the speed.Sponsored Links
