The Best Deep-Fryers for Home

1. T-Fal ActiFry

Fill the spoon with oil, set the timer, and watch as the ActiFry utilizes its "heat pulse" system and rotating paddle to fry foods. It steams and roasts, too, and has an audible countdown timer. Psaltis loved its design and how well it made a healthy stir-fry, but he was otherwise unimpressed: "Only firm foods cooked well," he said. "Its paddle smashed soft items like tater tots and french fries." [$200; tfalactifry.com]

2. Philips Airfryer

Were there an industrial-size version, I'd use it all the time," said Psaltis about the Airfryer, which uses circulated air and infrared tech to fry, grill, bake, or roast. With just two teaspoons of oil, every piece of fish Psaltis placed in the 28-ounce basket emerged golden and crispy. It also roasted vegetables expertly and grilled a tender steak. "It's simple, well-designed, and cooks very well," he says. [$280; amazon.com]

Like the Airfryer, this fryer uses hot air and an infrared unit to fry and roast foods. Its basket fits four cups of french fries; temperatures can be set as high as 400º. Psaltis loved how it fried chicken fingers without that stick-to-the-wall scent. "It's consistent and efficient," he said. "The only thing is, it's a bit flimsy." [$250; hammacher.com]
