7 best ways to keep your digital memories safe.

  • Print off your favourite pictures and put in an album.  I have pictures that are over 50 years old and still look in good shape.  If photos age or fade they can always be reprinted.
  • Keep your digital images on your hard drive.  Pictures take up a lot of memory so it may not be possible but at least you can access them very easily.
  • Transfer your digital images to an external drive.  You can get external drives with very big memories and the cost may not be as much as you think.
  • Digital memories can be saved in The Cloud.  No I don’t mean the white fluffy ones or even the grey ones that sends us rain.  Flickr is probably the best known image and video hosting website.
  • Back up your photos.  Even if you use online services, remember that companies can gout of business.  Save your digital memories in more than one place.  Consider saving photos off site in case of damage through fire or flood.  If saving to CD/DVD make two copies.  You could give them to family members.
  • Don’t delete your digital photos whilst they are still in your camera.  You may delete a photo by mistake.  Wait until you transfer the photo to a computer, where the image will be easier to see.
  • Don’t edit original digital photos in case you overwrite with an image that is not to your liking.  Make a copy before editing.
The general rule is that nothing lasts forever so back up and back up again.
