Lights: The Jewelry of a Room

As many of you know, design psychology is a passion of mine and lighting has the power to turn a drab room into a peaceful haven. While lighting’s main function is to create the ambiance for a room, it’s also an integral accessory for a space. Here’s your designer guide to choosing the best light features for your home.
Step 1: Gain inspiration from lighting stores, catalogs, and decor blogs and magazines. Looking at what’s available will help you determine which styles appeal to you.
Step 2: Determine the function of the room, as this will inform the type of lighting that the space will need. For example, task lighting is great for kitchens, entertaining spaces, steps, entries, hallways and work spaces. While exploring your lighting options, remember that you can always use “can lights” for task lighting in addition to your pretty fixtures to add style and function to the same room.

Step 3: Determine the style you’re going for — trendy, contemporary, sleek, traditional or impactful – and the message you want your decor to convey. Don’t be afraid to mix traditional and modern light fixtures in the same space!
Step 4: Keep in mind that walls are a great space for adding necessary light and making impactful design choices. TIP:Be sure to put these lights on dimmers so you can seamlessly alternate between task lighting and ambient lighting.
Step 5: When choosing light fixtures that will be visible from multiple spaces, be sure that they complement each other to maximize their impact.
TIP: Be sure you like the look of your fixture even when it’s off! Don’t forget that lighting is a 24 hour accessory.
Designer trick: Hang pendant lights or place table lamps in front of mirrors to double the lighting source!
Just like the color and furniture of any room, lighting should enhance your space. Lighting is what I call the jewelry of a room because it’s the single design element in the room you can change to easily alter the entire look of any room. Most importantly, be bold in your decision choices and don’t be afraid to make a statement.
