How to Start an Hair Salon (UNISEX)

It is easy to Start an Hair Salon (UNISEX). If you are a hair dresser, then, at some point, you will want to create your very own hair salon and thus go into business for yourself. However, in order to successfully do this, you are going to have to get a lot of things together, or else you will not have a properly working hair salon. So…just what do you need in order to have a nicely working hair salon? Read on to find out.
1: Know your clientele.
This one is a no-brainer. If you live in an area where the majority of the population is southerners, opening a salon with nothing but hair braiders probably isn’t very smart. That isn’t to say that you won’t get business. Offering hair-braiding services in suburban areas is actually quite smart. Many people don’t want to travel too far to have this kind of styling done. But you’ll need to diversify the services you offer to accommodate the masses.
2: Take control of your staff.
Salon owners who have no control over their staff will often find that their stylists dictate how the salon will be run. You will not only need to make sure that stylists are licensed and capable; you’ll also need to assess their professional demeanor. Clients will not want to deal with staff members who have amateurish behavior.
This means that they will need to accommodate their appointments on-time and with the appropriate conduct. Of course, this also means that you are going to have to decide on how much money you are going to pay your staff.
3: Choose the right location.
Location is critical to the success of your business. Consider these factors:
  • Get into a high-traffic area. Busy streets, malls or spaces next to locations people visit often (such as grocery stores) are ideal.
  • Try to have easy access. If parking is a hassle and traffic is thick on the way to your salon, people might not consider it worth the effort.
  • Stay away from the competition. Don’t situate yourself directly next to another salon — you’ll cancel each other out. Instead, try to stake out a place where you’ll be the only salon for a few blocks.
