Beauty Mistakes That Age You

  • Shimmery eye shadow. Yes, these shiny shadows may be trendy, but proceed with caution. Your eye area is the first to show signs of aging, because the skin in that area doesn't have oil glands and takes on a creepy look as we get older. Shimmery shadows can settle in the creases and make you look older. So opt for matte powder shadows, which can provide the same depth of color without unflattering effects."

  • Alcohol. This holiday season, consider alternating drinks - with water. Drinking alcohol causes dehydration and dilated blood vessels both of which make skin look tired and unhealthy. Try to drink one glass of water per alcoholic drink consumed - this will help skin stay hydrated.
  • Bronzing the eye area. "Applying bronzer too close to your eyes creates darkness around the eyes, a muddy look on the face, and ages women," says makeup artist Scott Barnes (scottbarnes.com), who's worked with Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Beyonce. To cop a youthful, healthy glow, put bronzer on the outside of the face to create a halo effect. "Bring it down the jaw line and neckline so they are one color. This will give a glowing complexion."
  • Not blending your foundation with a sponge. Think you're hiding wrinkles by piling on foundation? Excess makeup can have the opposite effect. After applying your foundation, create a soft, airbrushed look by gently pressing a damp makeup sponge all over your face, which removes makeup settled into lines.
  • Stress. Stress causes your body to go into survival mode by pumping adrenaline to heighten the senses. While this is healthy if you are in danger, prolonged periods of stress can take a toll on your skin. "When the body is in survival mode, the most vital organs like the heart, lungs and brain work overtime. The skin, a less vital organ, becomes deprived of nutrients which eventually affects its appearance." Combat stress by incorporating relaxation techniques into your routine like yoga, meditation and deep breathing.
  • Dark lip color. If you have any kind of vertical creases along your upper lip, a dark lip color will settle in those crevices within minutes of application. "But if you're wearing a light pink or beige, no one will see what's going into the cracks. Apply a coat of clear gloss on top to draw light to your lips, which will give your pout a full, youthful, supple appearance."
  • Over-tweezed eyebrows. "Excessive tweezing eventually will cause the brows to not grow back. "This will make the eyelid appear heavier - kind of like Joan Crawford in Mommy Dearest. To look younger, eyebrows should mimic the shape of the eye and not be too thin.
